Miguel de Cervantes was born near Madrid to a deaf surgeon in 1547. Miguel became a soldier in 1570 and was badly wounded during the Battle of Lepanto. He was captured by the Turks in 1575 and Cervantes spent five years in prison. Miguel was freed in 1580 and he returned home. He finally achieved literary success during his later years when he wrote Don Quijote.
Renaissance Spirit
Miguel de Cervantes made great contributions to the Renaissance in the 1600s. His most known and popular novel was Don Quixote. Don Quijote was a satire of medieval chivalry. The protagonist, Don Quixote, had his brain dried out from reading so many chivalry books, and thought he owned the best horse and the best weapons, but he didn't. He was paired up with his good friend Sancho Panza, his reliable servant, and go on many adventures together. Miguel de Cervantes was a humanist. His novels weren't related to religion. Everything was surrounded by why things happened and everything had an explanation. In a sense, Miguel was making fun of previous medieval era meaning he had a higher perspective and didn't think the same as people did before. He opened up a new style of writing.
